Grilled Rice Balls Print Email


Yaki Onigiri

1 cup freshly cooked Japanese rice, kept warm
2 tsp dark soy sauce
2 tsp sake
2 tsp mirin
2 tsp oil
1 tsp roasted sesame seeds
Dark soy sauce or soy sauce to serve
Nori sheets (optional)

Cook rice and preheat grill or pan. Combine soy sauce, sake, mirin, oil, and sesame seeds in a small bowl and set aside.

Wet your hands to prevent the rice sticking. Shape the rice into four equal balls. With your hands and fingers, flatten and shape rice ball into a flat triangle.

Gently brush a rice ball on one side, taking care not to use too much sauce or the rice ball will fall apart. Place on grill and brown first side, repeat with remaining rice balls. Just before turning, brush the second side and turn carefully. Serve immediately with soy sauce as desired. Delicious wrapped in a sheet of nori.
