Brown Sugar & Spice Glazed Ham Print Email


A traditional holiday ham with decorative cloves and a brown sugar and mustard glaze that’s so easy, anyone can do it!

1 whole ham
24 whole cloves, to taste
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp dry mustard
1/3 cup apple juice, cider or ginger ale

Remove ham from refrigerator 60-90 minutes before roasting. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Score roast 1/4 inch deep in a diamond pattern and insert cloves evenly about roast.

Place ham in a roasting pan, adding 1-2 cups of water, or enough water to cover the bottom of your pan at least 1/2 inch deep. Cover loosely with lid or tent with foil and roast for 10-12 minutes per pound.

While the ham heats, combine the brown sugar and dry mustard.

About 2/3 the way through cooking time, remove ham from oven and increase oven temperature to 325 degrees. Spread / pack the sugar and mustard to taste over the top and sides of ham, try to keep excess sugar out of the drippings. Return ham to 325-degree oven - uncovered.

Continue to roast uncovered until the ham reaches 140 degrees internal, basting gently with the juice once or twice as the roast finishes and glazes. Do not allow pan to cook dry, add more water if needed.
