Tony’s is Devoted to Lessening Hunger in our Community

Since 1978, Tony’s is proud that our family, our employees and our valued customers are members of such a caring community. Giving back is one of our fundamental values. Over the last ten years alone, we have donated over $500,000 in support of community causes.

As a food retailer, we believe that focusing on the issue of hunger is where we can contribute the greatest. Since day one we have committed deeply towards many local charities that help feed Denver’s homeless, including the Food Bank of the Rockies, The Mullen Home, Denver Children’s Home, The Tennison Home, Volunteers of America and the Franciscan Friends of the Poor -our adopted charity. This is deeply rewarding and the impact is genuinely felt. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that you have eased a person’s hunger pains.

Thanksgiving 2006

Dear Friends,

The past twelve months have been wonderful and busy at the Fransican Friends of the Poor. Each day we see miracles and have so many opportunities to help our brothers and sisters in need. Thanks to your prayers and financial donations, we have accomplished the following for our homeless friends over the past year:

  • We have fed over 21,000 five-course hot lunches (for many, this was their only meal for the day).
  • Served continental breakfast to over 12,000
  • Afforded 1800 hot showers; gave 600 haircuts
  • Distributed medicine, toiletries, and other personal hygiene daily.
  • Provided 48,000 minutes of local and long distance phone service.
  • Sent over 25 homeless out of state to be reunited with families.
  • Assisted with rent and utility in emergencies.
  • Delivered over 30,000 loaves of bread
  • Delivered over 350 boxes of food to neighbors in need
  • Laundered over 1500 bags of clothing
  • Distributed over 10,000 articles of clothing, coats and basics.

We did all of this from our small home and the tents in the front and back yard. But, we strive to do more! We wait for the day when the structure of Father Woody's Haven of Hope is a reality - a building with a large dining area, eight shower facilities, special private bedrooms for our homeless friends who are in need of convalescing, and plenty of room for offices and special services for our guests in need.

Our building is expected to be completed in the spring of 2007. Our services will expand to allow our homeless friends more stability. We will add counseling, spiritual guidance, medical, dental, optical, mental and social components to our mission. We will also provide much needed shelter on cold nights.

On behalf of our homeless friends who are often voiceless and faceless, thank you.

Fransiscans,
Jay Gould and Baldemar Garza
